What’s in a name?
Plenty it seems, but with only one letter different I have recently been introduced to my almost name sake, (Dr) Courtenay Harding on Youtube as she outlines the principles of therapeutic communities and how people with schizophrenia go about their journey of recovery, in Vermont… For while I’m a he, and she’s a she, Courtenay has excelled in her professional commitment and is credited as being an advocate for, and renovator of, public policy in mental health for decades. She has done more than most to counter the view that severe mental illness can only follow a deteriorating course. Her latest work follows the need for community integration and how in Vermont that is being achieved following on from the work of Dr George Brooks. Courtenay’s recent lecture: how Vermont taught the world about rehabilitation in people with severe and persistent psychiatric problems, covers two Centuries of progress. The only name for her life changing work is: inspirational. We thank you.
