Alcohol – How To Whittle Away At The Ultimate Gateway Drug

Jun 4, 2017

What’s in a surname?  Well, when it’s Whittle – quite a bit from engineering through to bio sciences.  Some will think of Sir Frank, thought leader and inventor of the first jet engine.  A design that thrust its’ way into the sky and also became the default producer of highly reliable and less polluting energy.  Others, when they think of Whittle, will think of Dr Brian, co-founder of GW Pharmaceuticals and a pioneer of medicinal cannabis – the adoption of which across US States shows increasing evidence of reduction in opioid induced suicides.  Steadily pain is more bearable and the body more at ease.

But these thought leaders have been joined by Jimmy Whittle, who previously was not at ease.  A proud Manx man with a less grand, but equally honest vision: to finally beat his own demons.  For 15 years his self-prescribed ‘medicine’ was alcohol, while he ‘medicated’ himself to sleep daily, to the point of unconsciousness.  But now he is embarking on an altogether different journey, one to row the English channel this summer in a boat built of beer cans.  He’s now energised to ‘row that boat across the sea’, than ‘kick the can down the road’.  His mind is focussing on sound diet along with hard physical training while calling too on his innate humour.  His mantra has gone from one of a ‘desperate beer round’, to one of ‘nice to be around’.  But no, we won’t drink to that – although we will all find another way to toast him when he achieves his cross channel goal.
